Colorado has one of the most colorful railroad histories in the world. Beginning in 1870, after the discovery of gold and silver in the mountains, construction pushed narrow and then standard gauge lines into nearly every canyon and high pass in the Rockies. The trains were the lifelines for many otherwise isolated towns.

The Colorado Railroad Museum has more than 60 historic narrow and standard gauge locomotives and cars on exhibit on 12 acres at the foot of North Table Mountain. The museum building, a replica of an 1880-style depot, houses thousands of rare old photographs, artifacts, and documents illustrating the colorful histories of the railroads that have served the state for more than 125 vears.
