The foothills in our area are a dynamic patchwork of grasslands, shrublands, and forests, much of which has been preserved and made accessible to local residents through the efforts of the Jefferson County Open Space program. The program was founded by a citizens' initiative in 1972; park purchases are funded by sales tax proceeds. Hiking and bike trails, picnic areas, fishing sites, and other recreational opportunities are central to the program. Elk Meadows
Bear Creek at Lair o' the Bear Park As open space for wildlife habitat, outdoor education, and recreation, these parks preserve some of the most scenic vistas and biologically rich habitats in Jefferson Co. Notable in the Lariat Loop area are Bear Creek Canyon, Mt. Falcon, Lair o' the Bear (left and below), Elk Meadow (above), Windy Saddle, Apex, and Matthews-Winters Parks. Hiwan Homestead, and Lookout Mtn. Nature Center & Preserve are also parts of the Jefferson Co. Open Space system, interpreting local history and natural ecosystems, respectively.

Together with the Denver Mountain Parks, Open Space forms a vast scenic and natural reserve, and also serves as important habitat for wildlife and native plant communities. Thanks to these efforts, natural preserves, geographic and biotic elements, and ecological processes will remain important aspects of regional heritage for Lariat Loop residents and visitors alike.
